Bristol Grammar School: Updated Crest Design

One of a series of concept re-designs of the Coat of Arms for Bristol Grammar School.

Brief supplied: A contemporary re-interpretation of a 400 year old painting to create an image that would have a wide variety of graphic applications.

This was an ancient coat of arms that needed to be updated in order to represent a forward-thinking school: this was an interesting conundrum. The solution that I came up with needed to maintain some of the original elements, but to jettison everything else: the formal shape of the shield and the surrounding swirls of fabric and mythical animals, for example. This seemed to be the best way to develop it into a modern graphical image that would easily translate onto clothing, letterheads and the rest of the school’s materials.
