oil sketch of tree in Somerset

Old oak tree oil sketch: Ebbor Gorge, Somerset

I took a very hurried photograph of this oak tree that stood at the entrance to the car park at Ebbor Gorge in Somerset, partly because the hollowed out husk of the trunk was an amazing shape, and partly because the yellowy lighting from an approaching storm gave it an insubstantial look quite opposed to what I associate with the nature of a tree.

I’d often marvelled that the remains of this ancient Somerset oak were still upright, and sadly the storm that lit it so dramatically for this oil painting was the one that finally caused it to topple over, and it has since been removed.
