Shipwreck Photographic Set

This 30 foot long, 25 foot high replica of a shipwreck was commissioned by the exceptionally talented photographer Amberly Valentine for her Arcadia project, which tells the story of an old Cornish legend.

The set itself had to be lightweight and easy to transport, as the shoot took place on Gunwalloe beach in Cornwall, as well as being robust enough to survive possibly inclement coastal weather, which made for an interesting design conundrum.

The masts were based primarily around thick cardboard carpet inner tubes with a wooden core for tensile strength, while the upright ribs and ship's planking were made from flexible plywood painted to look 3D.

In the end, the weather did turn on us, which provided a fantastic atmosphere for the shoot, but meant that the wreck ended the day slightly more broken down than it started as the booms had begun to collapse under the sheer volume of water that the cardboard tubing and heavy calico sails had absorbed.
